The much cooler predecessor to the loonie, this silver dollar was struck from 1935 to 1968. It depicts King George V on the front with a canoe containing a voyageur and Indigenous man on the back. The canoe also contains two bundles of furs - on one, the initials H.B. for Hudson’s Bay Company. It was to live on as a new gold-coloured coin however the dies depicting the design were “lost in transit”. To prevent the risk of counterfeiting, an alternate design featuring a loon was used.
